LAGOS State University students were shocked on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, as the LASUSU President, Comr. Tobun Haroun Dolapo was suspended indefinitely by the 34th Students' Parliamentary Council (SPC) led by Rt. Hon. Hassan Haleemah Abimbola through a press release circulated on all students' platforms.
The suspension follows allegations of financial misappropriation, lack of accountability, and unconstitutional actions, including closing the Transport Management Committee Office and providing an unauthorised account number for union bus revenue collection.
Investigations revealed that Dolapo had registered a personal Moniepoint account, "LASUSU TMC owned by MUIIZ OGUNDEJI," for union revenue collection without authorisation. He was also found guilty of hindering the Transport Management Committee's effectiveness and impersonating the Acting Chairman. The 34th LASUSU SPC unanimously decided to suspend Dolapo, and following the LASUSU constitution, Vice-President Comr. Oladiran Mercy will assume the role of Acting President.
This decision demonstrates the union's commitment to integrity and accountability. The 34th LASUSU SPC prioritises transparency and expects all members to adhere to the highest ethical standards.
The suspension has sent shockwaves through the University community, with students expressing mixed reactions. While some support the decision, others have raised concerns about the implications for the union's leadership.
The development highlights the ongoing struggles with governance and accountability within the LASU Students' Union. As the University community awaits further developments, the 34th LASUSU SPC's decision strongly conveys that transparency and accountability will be upheld.
