TWO students of the Lagos State University College of Medicine, LASUCOM, Idris Ibrahim Ideniyi and Adeniji-Bello Abdullah, have been awarded the prestigious 2024 Diana Award, a global recognition established in memory of the late Princess Diana of Wales.
A congratulatory post on the Facebook page of LASUCOM read: “In an inspiring milestone, two of our outstanding students, Idris Ibrahim Ideniyi and Adeniji-Bello Abdullah have been honored with the prestigious 2024 Diana Award, a global recognition established in memory of the late Princess Diana of Wales.
“The Diana Award recognizes young people who are making a difference in their communities and celebrates young changemakers committed to making a positive impact, and our students’ efforts exemplify this mission.
“Their innovation reflects Princess Diana’s belief that young people have the power to change the world, a belief Idris and Abdullah have brought to life through their efforts to promote blood donation and improve access to healthcare in underserved areas across Nigeria.
“The duo was nominated for their remarkable initiative, One Health Lifesavers, which they co-founded in March 2023 to address Nigeria's pressing blood shortage crisis.
“Through the One Health Lifesavers Platform and a blend of advocacy, education, and action, they have worked tirelessly to create awareness about the importance of blood donation. The initiative leverages social media campaigns, educational programs, and grassroots mobilization to change perceptions and encourage voluntary blood donation across diverse communities.
“Recognizing that awareness alone is not enough, the students have also extended their impact by organizing outreach programs that provide underserved communities with access to primary healthcare services.
““Our vision is to build a healthier Nigeria where the critical need for blood does not cost lives. By raising awareness and providing access to essential health care, we hope to bridge the gap and create lasting change,” the awardees explained whilst speaking to the College Information Unit about the groundbreaking experience.
“This recognition places LASUCOM at the forefront of fostering socially conscious medical leaders who are skilled in their field and passionate about driving meaningful change in society. The entire College community celebrates this well-deserved recognition and looks forward to supporting the continued impact of *One Health Lifesavers*.
