LASU CRPSGBV celebrates International Menstrual Hygiene Day

THE Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University,  Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello has emphasised the profound impact of menstrual health on various aspects of life while speaking at the International Menstrual Hygiene Day event organised by the Centre for Response and Prevention of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (CRPSGBV) in collaboration with Smile With Me Foundation.

In her words, "Menstrual health affects not only physical well-being but also academic performance, mental health, and social participation."

The event, held on Monday,  May 27, 2024, at 3 in 1 Hall,  LASU main campus, Ojo, Lagos, had the theme "Together for a Period-Friendly World." It was attended by a diverse audience, including students from LASU International School and their educators.

In her welcome address, Prof. Olatunji-Bello, who was represented by the Director of DICT, Prof. Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin, expressed gratitude to the partner organisations, Smile With Me Foundation, LAM Health, and Girls Pride (Blooming flow), for their collaboration in making the programme a success.

The Vice-Chancellor affirmed that the theme aligned closely with the University's commitment to inclusivity, equity, and student well-being. She reiterated that the event's objective was to debunk myths, promote education and awareness about menstrual health, support innovation and research, and involve males in understanding the necessary care and needs of females during their period.

The Acting Director of CRPSGBV, Dr Igot Ofem, highlighted the importance of addressing poor menstrual health and hygiene, which can undermine fundamental rights and exacerbate social and economic inequalities. She encouraged the participants to pay close attention to the Menstrual Hygiene Fireside chats, which were the highlight of the day.

The event featured insightful presentations by the Executive Director of Smile With Me Foundation, Dr Chioma Nwakanma-Akanno, on "Period Simplified and Myth Busting," and the Programme Director of Smile With Me Foundation, Dr Bola Owate, on "Period Shaming and the Role of Boys/Men in Supporting Period Health." The Founder of LAM Health, Ms Layota Adeniyi, also spoke about "Sustainable Period Care and our Planet."

The Menstrual Hygiene Fireside chats were well-received, with participants actively engaging in intellectual discussions. As a token of appreciation, the participants received sanitary pads and a copy of the book "BLOOMING FLOW," a young girl's guide on puberty written by Dr Abosede Lewu.
