LASUCEMAH celebrates International Museum Day

The event highlighted the importance of museums in fostering knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of diverse cultures.

THE Lagos State University Centre for Museums and African Heritage (LASUCEMAH) celebrated International Museum Day in Agege, Lagos, on Saturday, May 18, 2024. The LASU-Museum hosted the event, which revolved around the theme "Museum for Education and Research," aligning with the global observance of World Museum Day.

In her opening address, Prof Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, emphasised the significance of museums as cultural exchange centres that positively impact contemporary society. She highlighted how museums showcase the rich histories of different nations and foster cultural cooperation.

Representing the VC, Prof. Adenike Omotunde Boyo, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Administration, reiterated the importance of cultural institutions in providing historical educational experiences. She underscored the role museums play in supporting the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in providing inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities.

The guest lecturer, Princess Surah Animashaun, FHTI, who is also the Chairman of Epe Local Government, Lagos, highlighted the vital role of museums in shaping the understanding of the world across various disciplines. She commended the Lagos State University Centre for Museums and African Heritage for its efforts in preserving cultural artefacts and promoting collective heritage through research, exhibitions, and documentation.

Dr Habeeb A. Sanni, the Acting Director of the Directorate of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship at Lagos State University, delivered a paper titled "The Impact of Museums on Lagos History and Culture." He discussed the role museums play in preserving and promoting cultural heritage through exhibitions, educational programmes, and digital initiatives. Dr Sanni also highlighted how museums in Lagos enhance public understanding of the city's history, foster local pride and identity, and contribute significantly to tourism and cultural exchange.

The celebration featured a debate among students from several secondary schools on the topic "The Role of Museums in Education." Additionally, cultural dances and displays showcased Nigeria's rich cultural heritage. The event also acknowledged the contributions of the guest speakers with awards of appreciation.

Participating schools included Keke Senior High School, District Junior College, Dairy Farm Senior College, Unity Junior College, Stadium Junior Grammar School, Yewa Junior High School, and Sango Senior Secondary School.

Personalities in attendance included Dr Lateef Shekoni, representing the University Registrar, HRM Oba Hameed Adeyemi Aremu, the Elegbeda of Egbeda, Professor Olayinka Amuni, Professor Tayo Ajayi, Dr Raheem Ibrahim, Director of the Directorate of Internal Audit at Lagos State University, Mrs Margaret I. Ogunkoya, and other notable guests.

Mr Gbaja Kolawole Patrick, the Curator and Deputy Director of LASUCEMAH expressed gratitude in his vote of thanks at the ceremony. The event underscored the crucial role of museums in education and cultural preservation, reaffirming their significance in contemporary society.
