IN a recent interview with Channels Television, renowned Nigerian comedian, Warri Pikin shed light on the scarcity of female stand-up comedians in the country.
She attributed the lack of representation to the male-dominated nature of the industry, stating, "It's hard. For a woman to be in a male-dominated industry, you need to work twice as hard before they will come and say it's because you're fine that's why you're funny."
Warri Pikin, who has faced criticism despite her success, emphasised the need for encouragement to increase the number of female comedians. She recalled her experience winning Standup Comedian of the Year, saying, "I remember when I won, no be small curse them curse me for comment section... If other female comedians see those comments, they will go back to their shell."
Warri Pikin, therefore, urged women to persevere, saying, "You just need to ignore and tell yourself all die na die. I must do it regardless."
She highlighted societal factors, including gender bias, that hinder women from succeeding in the industry.
