NIGERIAN music superstar, Tiwa Savage has opened up about the discrimination she faced in the early days of her career, citing her sensual dress and style as the reason for the backlash.
In an interview with BET Talks host, Unique Chapman, Tiwa Savage revealed that she was heavily criticised, had her songs banned on terrestrial stations, and was even stopped from performing due to her risqué dress sense and sensual music.
"They get overlooked and they can't do soundchecks," Tiwa Savage said, highlighting the discriminatory practices faced by female artists.
"Initially, when I first moved back, I would turn up for a show and they would say I couldn't perform because of my outfit," she added.
Despite the obstacles, Tiwa Savage decided to double down on her style and profile as a sex symbol, saying "I am very stubborn. So I was like my dress is just going to get shorter and my shirt is going to get more revealing."
Tiwa Savage credits her female fans for helping her navigate this challenging situation and grow her supporter base to the point where show promoters and the media couldn't ignore her.
